Steps to become a lifeguard/Instructor at the Kinsmen Aquatic Centre

There are six steps required to become a lifeguard:

  1. Bronze Medallion (must be 13 years of age)
  2. Bronze Cross
  3. Intermediate First Aid with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) level C and automated external defibrillator (AED)
  4. Swim Instructor
  5. Lifesaving Instructor
  6. National Lifeguard - Pool (must be 16 years of age)

  5. National Lifeguard

Duties

Challenges the candidate both mentally and physically. Judgment, knowledge, skill, and fitness – the four components of water rescue – form the basis of Bronze Medallion training. Candidates acquire the assessment and problem-solving skills needed to make good decisions in, on, and around the water. Bronze Medallion is a prerequisite for assistant lifeguard training in Bronze Cross.
