Looking ahead to the future for senior men’s hockey
Lacombe, Alberta (May 30, 2019) – The City of Lacombe’s investment in the Gary Moe Auto Group Sportsplex was in part intended to support high-calibre hockey in the community. The 2019 Allan Cup Tournament, which was a major success, brought teams from across Canada to our city, and this would not have been possible without the recent sportsplex enhancements, as well as committed staff, dedicated volunteers, fans, and the Lacombe Generals.
On May 27, 2019, management of the Lacombe Generals notified the City of Lacombe that the team has withdrawn from what remains of the Senior AAA hockey league, due to a lack of teams with which to compete. They have also notified the City they are pursuing other opportunities to continue to be Lacombe’s senior men home team.
“In discussions with the Generals’ management, I’ve been impressed by the energy and enthusiasm I hear,” said Director of Community Services Deborah Juch. “They’re keen to find alternate ways to build a league and continue playing the game they love in Lacombe.”
The team’s management will meet with City officials next week to outline their plan for the 2019-2020 season. The City is optimistic that the facility will continue to host great hockey for fans in our community.
